By Samantha Rodriguez The last time country rock group Cowboy Diplomacy released music was back in 2017. Fast forward from two years ago to today and now, they’re making a comeback with their fascinating single, “The Get Down.” The single was released today, Friday, August 2, 2019 and it definitely brings forward the encouragement and motivation people may be seeking. Ian Cochran, the lead singer, reveals that “The Get Down” is whatever it may mean to a person, whether they “choose vices and distractions or purpose.” The song itself emits an energetic and vivacious mood that aligns with the lyrics, which were constructed from past experiences involving partying, alcohol, and drugs. Cochran describes these experiences in a negative light, declaring that they made him feel “empty.” With that, he decided to retaliate by immersing himself into music and optimism and generally a better, healthier lifestyle. The lyrics in “The Get Down” have numerous meanings. It can be about finding oneself, having self-control and discipline, or even persevering towards one’s goals. Throughout the song, Cochran states the importance of following one’s passion by singing “fight for the funk running through your bloodstream / Maybe it’s time to live your life.” In addition to the moving lyrics, the usage of heavy, electric guitar intertwined with brass instruments along with Ian’s powerful voice, call for “The Get Down” to be considered a “rock anthem.” To sum it all up, “The Get Down” is about getting straight to business and not succumbing to the pain or distractions in our lives. It’s about doing what makes one feel alive and what makes one feel like they have a purpose.
Along with Ian Cochran, his bandmates Brad Bentley (bass), Billy Boswell (lead guitar), and Matt Whilden (drums) all come together to create astounding and meaningful music. Not only have they been voted “Best Band of Austin” in 2017 by the Austin Monthly, but they were also chosen to be one of Black Fret’s 2017 nominees. “The Get Down” will be their first single release that leads into their upcoming debut album.
